The Benedictional of St Æthelwold- folios 90v - 91r

A full page miniature of the Anglo Saxon Abbess Saint Ætheldreda (Æthelthryth) or Æþelðryþe in it’s original Old English.  She is shown holding a book and flower.

This beautiful manuscript was made for the personal use of Aethelwold, who was bishop of Winchester from 963 to 984, which gives us a convenient date of around 970 for its creation.

The “open book” image is a giant mosaic I put together that is 2600 x 1900 pixels in size, so make sure you view it full size.
