apparently he was so displeased when the second vatican council decided (because you know no one speaks latin anymore) to make masses and prayers in english instead of the original latin (remember tolkien was a philologist and a hardcore traditionalist) that he would very loudly and pointedly continue to recite the prayers in latin during church and his kids were just like “dad dad no”
